Rediscovering Potato Creek State Park A Weekend Getaway Close to Home

As winter finally loosened its grip, the first warm days of spring beckoned us outdoors. With temperatures soaring into the 70s, it was the perfect moment for a midweek escape. After considering several options in Indiana, we ultimately chose to return to Potato Creek State Park, just south of South Bend.

This charming park is a mere hour’s drive from our home, making it ideal for a quick trip. It also provided the perfect opportunity to spruce up our RV and double-check our gear for an upcoming extended journey through the stunning national parks of southern Utah and Arizona.

The cool, refreshing spring air made the drive enjoyable. Upon our arrival, we were pleasantly surprised to find only a handful of fellow campers. The friendly gatekeeper allowed us to select our preferred campsite. Having stayed in Loop B before, we chose one of the more secluded, grassy spots. The first night was a camper's delight, with the entire quarter of the loop to ourselves.

As dusk settled and the vibrant colors of the sunset cast shadows across the park, we went for a peaceful walk around a couple of camping loops.

On our second night, a fellow camper set up across from us—a perfect mix of solitude and community. We enjoyed two peaceful evenings, fully immersed in the natural beauty that surrounded us.

During our visit to Potato Creek, we made use of the water and dump stations a couple of times while flushing out our RV's water lines for the upcoming season. The dump station here is among the best I've seen. With four or five lanes available, it made the process quick and hassle-free. Just across the road, a new water filling station provided another convenient upgrade, featuring four lanes to streamline refills. These facilities were a fantastic surprise that enhanced our stay.

As we explored the park, we learned about an exciting development coming soon: the Potato Creek Inn. This lodge, currently under construction on the south side of Worster Lake, aims to be a showcase for Indiana State Parks. It promises stunning lake views and is planned to open in late 2026 or 2027. The anticipation is already building for what this new feature will add to the visitor experience!

In addition to the varied biking and hiking trails, the park includes several picnic areas, making it an ideal spot for families to gather, share meals, and soak up the sun. It's a fantastic place to bond over outdoor activities and create lasting memories in nature.

Reflecting on our weekend at Potato Creek, we were reminded of how refreshing this getaway was. Adventure doesn't always require long travels; sometimes, a nearby escape to local natural gems is all you need to relax and recharge.
